Starbucks Coffee Logo Information and History

The Starbucks Coffee logo was designed by an artist named Terry Heckler, who drew inspiration from the port of Seattle. The mermaid's head and body were also altered, leaving just a ring reading "Starbucks Coffee." The company's internal design team worked to find a new approach and updated the logo. The mermaid was recolored Starbucks green and the words "coffee" were removed.

The Starbucks logo changed from brown to green in 1987 and again in 1992. The current version is much more modern. The company did not say when or where the new logo will debut. But, it did say that it would begin to be seen in March 2011 when the company celebrates its 40th anniversary. It may be a good time to update your coffee shop's logo, as the changes are already in the works. Hopefully, the new logo will have many more uses for it than before.

Originally, the Starbucks logo depicted a mermaid, which drew sailors to small islands. In other words, it entices customers to buy their coffee. Starbucks' logo was created in 1971 by Terry Heckler. The logo was inspired by a woodcut of a siren, a sea creature that lures sailors to their deaths. While this may seem like a strange choice, the siren is an important symbol to the company.

Basic Colors

We've taken a look at the image and pulled out some colors that are common across lots of logos. The colors below aren't the exact colors found in the image, but approximations to common colors.

Teal
Black
Silver

Advanced Colors

We've extracted the below 'advanced colors' from the logo. These should be much closer to the actual colors found in the logo. Our extractor tries to only take the main colors of the image and tries to ignore shading on anti-aliasing or shadows. This generally leads to better results, but in some circumstances you might find a few unusual colors being pulled from the logo.

Jungle green
Black
Greyish teal
Light grey
Charcoal grey

Hex Colors

The below are the hex colors that are found in the logo. You can assume that these are the actual colors used in the logo. Our color extraction tool that takes the colors from the logo tries to ignore anti-aliasing and shadows, so you may sometimes find a slightly odd result, but this is rare. These colors should be very similar to the Advanced Colors, but you'll notice subtle differences. If you're interested in the exact color then use the hex, but if you're trying to describe the logo then use the Advanced Color or the Basic Color above.
