Apple Mac Logo History

This is the Apple Inc. emblem — the bitten-apple silhouette originally created by designer Rob Janoff in 1977 (which began as a rainbow-colored apple). Over decades Apple moved to monochrome and metallic executions; the silver/gray apple became a common treatment on Macintosh hardware and product branding from the late 1990s onward.

Frequently asked

Is this the Apple (Mac) logo?

Yes — it's the bitten-apple emblem used by Apple Inc., commonly seen on Mac computers and other Apple products.

Who designed the Apple logo?

The iconic bitten-apple concept was created by designer Rob Janoff in 1977; the company later adopted monochrome and metallic treatments.

Why is there a bite in the apple?

The bite was added for scale and recognizability so the apple would be seen as an apple (not a cherry or other round fruit).
