The bottom left features a blue field with a large white star, and the bottom right quarter is colored yellow with a red diagonal stripe that contains a narrow white stripe.

In the center of the shield, there is a smaller inlaid shield that has a green background and a yellow border. This smaller shield features a red dragon on the left and a silver-colored arm wielding a mace on the right.

Beneath the shield, two silver branches with leaves curve upwards from the bottom of the shield. In between these branches, there is a ribbon with the phrase "A VIDA É COMBATE" in black capital letters on a white background.

At the very bottom of the circular border is the full name of the institution, "Universidade Federal do Maranhão," in black capital letters following the curve of the yellow border.
